Bad breath can result from poor dental hygiene. The good news is that good dental hygiene can often prevent bad breath.
What Causes Bad Breath?
According to the WebMD, a number of things can cause bad breath (also called halitosis):
- Certain Foods. When food breaks down in your mouth, it can result in bacteria that causes a bad odor. Some foods, such as garlic, onions and spices can lead to halitosis even after you’ve eaten them. After your body digests the food, the substance enters the bloodstream and then your lungs, which can create odor in your breath. In fact, the odor may linger until the food has passed through your body.
- Tobacco products. Smoking and chewing tobacco can create a bad odor in your mouth. Not to mention, tobacco products can lead to gum disease, which is another source of halitosis.
- Poor dental hygiene. Food particles that stick between your teeth lead to bacterial growth around the tooth, the gums and the tongue. You can counteract the bacteria by flossing, brushing and using mouthwash. Dental hygiene also applies to cleaning dental appliances and making sure they are properly fitted.
- Gum disease. When gum disease goes untreated, it can cause bad breath. However, even. Worse it can harm your gums and jawbone.
Dental Care Routines that Can Help
Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day helps to keep bacteria in check. Also, using mouthwash helps kill bacteria. Tongue scraping can remove food particles and bacteria from your tongue, which also helps fight bad breath.
