Guidelines for dental safety and summer fun

Summer dental safety tips are good to keep in mind during the hot months of the year. Kids are out in the heat, often being active and playing sports. And, when hungry and on the go, they might load up on sugary snacks for quick energy. That’s why the following tips can help parents with their children during the summer months.

Why is staying hydrated so vital?

On various levels, staying hydrated is crucial. The Mayo Clinic recommends staying hydrated because the human body depends on water for health. Water comprises about 50 to 70 percent of an individual’s body weight. From a dental perspective, drinking water helps wash away food particles in your mouth, which can prevent tartar and plaque buildup. It’s good for cavity prevention and health gums. It also is critical for other bodily functions such as:

  • Regulating body temperature
  • Flushing waste from the body
  • Supporting a healthy immune system
  • Lubricating and cushioning the joints
  • Promoting health digestion
  • Improving memory, sleep, mood and cognitive function

Ensure your kids drink lots of water during the summer. Depending on the extent of heat and how active your kids are, they may need more than the average amount of water to stay healthy. In general, the recommended mount water intake is eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day—or 64 ounces.

Why is it important to avoid sugary foods?

The summer routine may vary greatly compared with a normal school routine. Kids tend to stay up later and sleep in. This may also throw off their habit of eating healthy meals. When on the run, it seems easier to grab a snack, which isn’t preferable, especially if the snack is loaded with sugar. You should stock your kitchen with healthy snacks, such as nuts, fruits, veggies and low sugar drinks. Encourage them to drink water, too.

How can mouth guards protect kids who are active in sports?

While some kids might be into football, where wearing a mouthguard is a must, even other sports like basketball, baseball, or soccer can cause in accidents. A ball can hit the child in the mouth, or during a scuffle, someone’s elbow can knock out a tooth. Accidents sometimes happen when kids engage in sports and physical activity. Mouth guards help prevent damage. In addition, some mouth guards are clear and not very noticeable.
