Things You Can Do to Reduce Staining

Stained teeth are something no one wants, whether it results from wine, tobacco, tea, coffee or other beverages. Just because red wine or a cup of coffee stains teeth doesn’t mean you have to give them up as part of your New Year’s resolutions. Many people whiten their teeth to deal with stains. But, there are also things you can do naturally to prevent staining.

Why Do Some People’s Teeth Stain More Than Others?

According to a U.S. News article your enamel strength and plaque buildup affect how much your teeth will stain.

The doctor quoted in the article used the example of drinking red wine. He said the pigments in grapes bind to your teeth. The acidity in wine etches tooth enamel and that makes it more porous and vulnerable for staining.

What Can You Do to Prevent Stained Teeth?

Here are some natural things you can do to help prevent staining your teeth:

  • Brush your teeth before drinking wine. You can remove the plaque buildup if you brush before hand. However, don’t brush afterward. Brushing afterward may tend to create more etching.
  • Swish with water. After drinking wine or a staining beverage, swish and rinse your mouth with water. This will lessen the acidity and make your saliva flow. Saliva has properties that fight harmful bacteria. It helps to balance your oral PH.
  • Chew food well. Chewing food also produces saliva. Therefore, you’re better off eating something with the wine or other beverage.
  • Get your teeth cleaned. It’s wise to get your teeth cleaned regularly to remove plaque buildup. A dental hygienist uses the effective tools to scrape the plaque off your teeth. There are places between teeth that flossing and brushing can’t reach.
