Bad-breath

Are you concerned about having bad breath?

Another name for bad breath is halitosis. No one likes bad breath, not the people who have it or the people around them. As a result, there are numerous cosmetic products that people use to cover it up—breath mints, mouth washes, gum, etc.

However, none of these products get to the source of the problem. And, getting to the source is the most effective way to eliminate any problem.

What causes bad breath?

You can begin dealing with the issue by understanding possible causes:

  • Certain types of food. Some foods tend to make your breath smell bad. Some of the most common foods that do this are garlic, onions and spices. As food breaks down in your mouth, bacteria increases. Some bacteria causes unpleasant odors.
  • Tobacco users, those who smoke or chew tobacco are likely to have a foul breath. Giving up the use of tobacco products and get rid of this source.
  • Dental hygiene issues. When you fail to brush and floss daily, food particles can build up in your mouth and between your teeth. Your tongue also can gather bacteria that results in odor. Cleaning dentures and partial dentures is important as well.
  • Dry mouth factor. Because saliva washes away food practices, a lack of saliva can result in lingering food that produces bacteria. Dry mouth can result from some diseases or medications.
  • Oral infections. Surgical injuries after oral surgery such as tooth removal can cause bad breath. So can tooth decay, mouth sores or gum disease.
  • Diseases or physical conditions. Chronic sinus conditions, inflammation in the nose or throat and even small stones forming in the tonsils can cause mouth odor. In addition, certain metabolic disorders like acid reflux and some cancers cause halitosis.

What changes can you do to make your breath more pleasant?

Lifestyle changes that help some people include:

  • Brushing after eating
  • Cleaning your tongue
  • Flossing
  • Drinking lots of water
