Questions-about-Dental-Implants

What would you like to know about dental implants?

Patients often have questions about dental implants. After all, dental implants are a significant investment. For this reason, it’s important to understand the process and what to expect.

The following are FAQs we often address with patients.

What is a dental implant?

The ADA (American Dental Association) describes implants as anchors that function like screws. Their purpose is to replace the root of a tooth. If your dentist pulls a tooth or you are missing a tooth in the upper or lower jaw, an implant might be a good replacement. The implant replaces the root and the crown replaces the tooth.

How long do implants last?

They can last up to 20 or 30 years, depending on the patient. Good oral hygiene can help you take care of your teeth, which goes a long ways toward making them last.

Is everyone a candidate for an implant?

Not necessarily. You must be in good health. Also, you must have adequate bone tissue and healthy gums.

Do implants ever fail?

They can fail if infection becomes a problem. Bacteria can cause infection. You must be careful after the procedure to keep the area clean so infection doesn’t occur. In addition, infection can take place years later. The problem with infection is that over time, it can lead to bone loss. Implants loosen when bone loss occurs.

Are tooth implants painful?

You may experience some pain after the procedure. However, discomfort usually only lasts a few days for most patients.

What is dental bone grafting?

If you don’t have good bone tissue in your jaw to support an implant, bone grafting may be an option. This procedure takes bone from another place in the body. The surgeon then grafts that bone tissue to the existing bone in the jaw. Using synthetic bone is sometimes another option. It takes about four months for the jaw to heal. Afterward, the dentist can give you an implant and crown.
