Can wisdom teeth growth lead to migraine headaches?
Wisdom teeth and migraine headaches may have a connection. In fact, people grow wisdom teeth at different times in their life. Some develop them late in their teenage years. Other people develop them in their twenties or later on.
What problems can arise through wisdom teeth?
According to Medical News Today, as wisdom teeth grow, they can put pressure on the sinuses. You might feel the pressure in your upper jaw area.
If you’re already prone to migraine headaches, developing wisdom teeth might trigger a migraine or make one worse. Your head has pain receptors that connect with the mouth. The central nerve in your head can pick up the irritation.
Also, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be related to migraines. The TMJ is the joint that connects to the chewing muscles in your jaws. Pain from this joint can manifest in the head, face, neck or inside the mouth. Sometimes TMJ pain and migraine pain occur together. In fact, the TMJ pain can intensify the migraine. It can also increase the likelihood of a migraine becoming chronic.
What are the symptoms of a migraine?
Frequent symptoms include:
- Severe headache that prevents normal functioning
- Head pain on one or both sides
- Throbbing or pounding pain
- Hypersensitivity to smells, light and sounds
- Vomiting or nausea
Impacted wisdom teeth can affect the nerves, causing a constant ache in the jaw. In turn, this pain can connect migraines to the developing wisdom teeth.
