How can dental bonding improve your smile?
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that dentists use to improve patients’ smiles. There are various situations where dental bonding is a useful technique.
How does dental bonding work?
Also called composite bonding or teeth bonding, dental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite that can adjust the color, shape or size of a tooth.
What are some circumstances when dentists use bonding?
For cosmetic improvements, dentists use bonding to do the following:
- Cover up tooth discoloration
- Hide chips or cracks in teeth
- Make teeth appear longer
- Alter the shape of teeth
- Close spaces or gaps between teeth
- Fill cavities, especially in the front of the mouth
- Replace old mercury silver fillings
- Deal with gum recession by protecting teeth roots
Is dental bonding different than dental veneers?
Yes, it is different. Dental veneers are thin ceramic shells that the dentist can attach to the front surfaces of your teeth. Prior to attaching the veneers, the dentist would remove some of your natural tooth enamel, and then use an adhesive to stick the veneers to the tooth. Typically, you might need to replace your veneers every 10 to 20 years.
By comparison, bonding does not require much enamel removal, and no replacement is necessary. The dentist might need to touch up the bonding every three to 10 years, but the bonding itself is permanent.
Whether using bonding or veneers, the dentist will match the color to your teeth.
Is there any pain involved with teeth bonding?
Fortunately, there is no pain because it doesn’t affect the nerves in your teeth, which are the source of pain. For this reason, dentists typically don’t need to use anesthesia for dental bonding. Afterward, you might experience a slight sensitivity, but it is temporary.
