Types-of-dentists

Understanding the different dentist titles

There are different types of dentists. For everyday people, the titles may seem confusing. DDS, DMD, orthodontist, periodontist, endodontist, prosthodontist and oral surgeon. What’s the difference?

DDS and DMS

Many dentists have “DDS” or “DMD” after their names. DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. DMD stands for Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine. Both dentists have medical degrees. And, both have received the same dental education. Different universities use different designations for awarding what is the same degree. (Reference: ADA website Mouthhealthy.org).

This is the general dentist that treat patients for cavities and gum disease. They  provide crowns, bridges, root canals and offer preventative treatment.

Orthodontists

Orthodontists deal with teeth misalignments involving the jaw and teeth. Tooth misalignment can be due to missing teeth, extra teeth or crowded teeth. Orthodontists treat children and adults. They usually fit them for braces and retainers or Invisalign.

Periodontists

Periodontists treat gums and the tissues surrounding the teeth. They can treat gum disease and also place dental implants.

Endodontists

These types of dentists specialize in saving teeth and treating tooth pain. They specialize in root canals and other methods to save teeth.

Prosthodontists

Prosthodontists help patients by restoring or replacing damaged or lost teeth. They also restore jaw structures (TMJ/TMD). You can receive treatment for dental implants, dentures and bridges.

Oral Surgeons

Oral surgeons treat disease and injuries through surgery. They can remove wisdom teeth, place dental implants and perform biopsies on spots in the mouth. They may do reconstructive dental surgery on accident victims and jaw realignment surgery and soft tissue repair.

Pediatric Dentists

Pediatric dentists focus their practice on dentistry for children, from infancy through adolescence. They take a child friendly approach, providing preventative care and dental treatment.
