Challenges to Overcome with Invisible Braces

Invisible braces have become increasingly popular. In fact, many adults and children today are using them over traditional braces.

According to U.S. News, here are some statistics that indicate their popularity:

  • Between 1989 and 2016, nearly 4.3 million patients from age 17 and younger in North America used invisible aligners (66% increase)
  • The majority of patients using clear braces are adults.

What Challenges Might You Face?

In general, teenagers as well as adults like invisible braces because they look more attractive than traditional braces. However, both invisible and traditional braces put you more at risk for gum disease and cavities. This is due to the fact that effectively brushing and flossing becomes more difficult.

However, with clear aligners you face an additional problem. The plastic tray prevents saliva from reaching your gums and teeth. As a result, this can enable bacteria to build up and form plaque. After eating or drinking, it’s vital to brush and floss. If that is not possible, you should rinse with water before putting aligners back in your mouth.

What Patients Are Good Candidates for Invisible Braces?

Based on the above information, a patient who will be diligent about dental hygiene is the best candidate. You must keep clear aligners in your mouth for 22 hours a day.

For example, one family had a 13-year old son who did fine with clear aligners until the Covid-19 pandemic changed his lifestyle. When stuck at home, instead of keeping a regular meal schedule, he started snacking a lot.

The teenager began putting the aligners back in his mouth without brushing his teeth. Also, with constant snacking, it was hard to maintain the 22 hour schedule.

In the end, his parents replaced their son’s clear aligners with traditional braces.
