What are root planing and tooth scaling, and when are they necessary?
Root planing and tooth scaling are dental techniques that remove plaque. Tooth scaling removes plaque on the teeth. Root planing removes plaque beneath the gums on the root. Dentists refer to both of these terms together as deep cleaning.
When is deep cleaning necessary?
Patients who have periodontal disease require more than just a regular dental cleaning. Dentists recommend deep cleaning for them. According to the Cleveland Clinic, nearly 50% of Americans over 30 have some stage of periodontal disease. The more you age, the greater your risk for developing it. In fact, about 75% of adults over age 65 have periodontal disease.
What happens during root planing and tooth scaling?
The process is quick and can be done in one visit. The dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and gums. A dental hygienist does the procedure, using a tool to scrape the plaque build-up off your teeth and off your roots beneath the gums.
In some dental practices, hygienists use an ultrasonic scaler. When using the powered tool, the tip vibrates and chips off the tarter. The tool has a water spray to flush the plaque out of gum pockets and wash it away. For some patients, the hygienist might inject an antibiotic medication into the gum pockets as well.
What are the benefits?
The process kills bacteria. Any inflammation you experienced will heal, and your gums can reattach more firmly to the roots of your teeth.
