Keeping your teeth healthy

An interdental cleaning brush can help you clean between your teeth, where your toothbrush doesn’t reach. The following are questions patients often ask about interdental cleaning.

What is interdental cleaning?

Interdental cleaning uses floss or a brush to go between teeth. The technique removes food debris and dental plaque that collects between tooth surfaces. This type of cleaning protects you against tooth decay and gum disease.

Why is interdental cleaning necessary?

According to dentalhealth.org, brushing your teeth reaches about 60 percent of the tooth’s surfaces. Cleaning the gaps between teeth helps remove plaque buildup. Keep in mind, plaque can result in gum inflammation, tooth decay and bad breath.

How do you pick the right size of interdental cleaning brush?

An interdental brush is small, so it can reach in between your teeth. The best way to decide on your brush size is to ask your hygienist or dentist. Otherwise, you can get an idea by inserting the brush between your teeth, close to the gums, while looking in the mirror. You want a snug fit. However, the wire shouldn’t touch the sides of the teeth or gums. Also, you should be able to move the full brush length back and forth about two or three times. Never force the brush between the teeth if it’s too large. You might need several different sizes to fit between the spaces of all your teeth.
