Online Tool to Help Seniors Connect to Local, Affordable Dental Care
Dental professionals have long known that older Americans tend to have more dental issues than their younger counterparts and the Wisdom Tooth Project can help. It’s estimated that almost every person over 65 in the United States (96%) has had at least one cavity and that about 20% still have untreated tooth decay. Almost 70% have some level of tooth decay and a similar percentage have lost all or most of their original teeth.
The dental treatment options can also be different for seniors. For example, many may have an increased sensitivity to some of the anesthetics, analgesics or other medications that are commonly a part of oral care. Furthermore, older patients may already be using medications that may put them at risk of adverse reactions to the drugs used in dental treatment.
In response to the need to bring attention to and provide resources to treat dental issues in senior citizens across the nation, the Wisdom Tooth Project was created. Originally a partnership between Oral Health America and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, it is now under the auspices of Authority Dental.
How Does the Wisdom Tooth Project Work?
The focus of the Wisdom Tooth Project has always been the oral health needs of older Americans. The online tools available include a searchable database to help connect seniors to the dental care they need. There are also informative articles about dental health, written in plain English, addressing a wide range of issues that typically affect older patients. The site also targets caregivers and other health professionals who may work with elders and observe oral health challenges.
