Actresses and Their Dentistry

Some Hollywood star dental facts show how dentistry affected their appearance. Rumors went back and forth about Joan Crawford, some claiming that she had molars removed to give her cheeks a more sunken appearance. Sunken rather than rounded cheeks were considered more attractive and sophisticated during that era of movies.

What were the true facts about Joan Crawford’s dental work?

According to Bustle.com, Joan Crawford received extensive dental work. The truth is: she had teeth removed, and they did give her cheeks a sunken look. However, dental health was the reason for extraction rather than to enhance her appearance.

Joan Crawford had decay between her front teeth and around the roots of the teeth. This health condition occurred during 1928-1930, when tooth colored fillings didn’t exist. Porcelain caps or crowns were the only available solution. Consequently, the dentist filed down her teeth and gave her caps. The dentist also had to extract some of her molars. Even so, her gums became infected, and this stretched her mouth. When the swelling went away, her upper lip was larger.

What was “the Crawford mouth”?

It turned out that Joan was pleased with the change in her upper lip. As a result, she painted her lower lip, which people called “the Crawford mouth.” These were unintended cosmetic consequences for her.

What other Hollywood star dental facts did people find interesting?

Marlene Dietrich supposedly had upper molars removed like Joan Crawford, with the purpose of creating hollow cheekbones.

Today, it is common for actors and actresses to get cosmetic surgery and dental work done to enhance their appearances. The “Hollywood smile” is a common phrase that speaks to this fact.
