Orthodontics covers more than braces
Today’s types of orthodontic treatment go beyond the scope of braces. In fact, options for straightening teeth encompass other techniques than traditional braces.
What does orthodontics mean?
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), orthodontics deals with the “diagnosis, prevention, interception, guidance and correction of bad bites. The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy bite—straight teeth that properly meet opposing teeth in the opposite jaw. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak.”
What types of orthodontic treatment exist today?
People used to hear the word orthodontics and immediately think “braces.” However, it encompasses more than just braces. The following are types of orthodontic treatment:
- Veneers and bonding. Dentists use a tooth-colored resin and bond it to the surface of the tooth. It matches the tooth color. Bonding covers an imperfect tooth and helps correct your bite. Veneers are a thin covering made of ceramic. The dentist attaches the veneer to the front of the tooth to restore the tooth’s shape. Through veneers, bonding and whitening, you can achieve the Hollywood smile.
- Six-Month Smiles®. This technology uses tooth colored brackets and wires to gradually straighten the patient’s teeth over a period of about 6 months. It’s an easy, great way to treat someone’s moderate or severe crowding without having to be in braces for years.
- Clearcorrect is an aligner technology that uses small clear plastic mouthpieces that snap over the teeth. They invisibly straighten the patient’s teeth over months. We don’t have to take impressions of the teeth to use it. It’s exciting because it actually straightens the teeth invisibly.
