Does the idea of dental treatment make you feel anxious?
People have various reasons for fear of going to the dentist. One of the most common reasons includes being afraid of pain. In addition, they fear the sound of drills and the smell of chemicals. Another reason, although far less common, is the discomfort of keeping open their mouth a long time. People also have concerns about paying dental bills.
According to U.S. News, 6 out of 10 people surveyed across the world said they were afraid of dental treatment. Also, close to 4% said they had never gone to a dentist, and 16% said they only went when it was urgent.
However, if you ignore dental problems, they usually become even worse.
What can you do to handle your fear of going to the dentist?
The following actions can help you lessen your fear of dental visits:
- Choose a dentist who is right for you. Qualities to look for in a dentist include a dentist who is empathetic, caring and makes you feel at ease. Do they answer your questions and is the office a pleasant environment?
- Discuss your fears. Letting your dental hygienist or dentist know about your fears can help in overcoming them. A lack of information can often result in fear. Give your dentist or hygienist a chance to explain procedures or possible solutions.
- Get ready for the dental visit. Some things you can do are to allow plenty of time in your schedule so you don’t feel rushed. Forgo eating sugar or drinking coffee prior to the appointment. These foods tend to increase anxiety. Also, perhaps a friend or family member can go with you for moral support.
- Schedule regular dental checkups. Regular checkups can help you avoid more serious problems. Also, they will help you become more comfortable with the process.
- Address concerns about pain. You dentist may allow you to take an over-the-counter pain reliever prior to the visit. It can help lessen pain and discomfort. You can receive an anesthetic to numb pain prior to filling a cavity. Topical anesthetics can help you avoid the pain of the injection.
- Work out a plan to cover costs. Many dentists have payment options. In addition, an insurance plan can help with costs.
