What you should know about dentures
Problems with dentures falling out can be an embarrassing moment. No one wants to experience that—not the person it’s happening to nor the person watching it happen.
The U.S. Sun published an article about a disastrous first date. One of the worst moments occurred when the date was eating salsa and chips, and his dentures fell out of his mouth. They landed on the dinner table. Needless to say, he didn’t make a very good first impression.
What should you do if you have a problem with dentures falling out?
You should make an appointment with your dentist. Your dentist will examine your dentures and can recommend relining, repairing, or replacing them. Until you can get to the dentist, avoid eating hard foods. Having to chew vigorously increases the possibility of dentures falling out.
What causes dentures to fall out?
There are various reasons dentures could fall out. Some of them include:
- Damage. If you drop your dentures or don’t store them properly, they can bend or warp. Excessively hot or cold temperatures may do this to them as well.
- Poorly fitted. When dentures don’t fit properly, you’re at risk for having them fall out. Also, if not manufactured correctly, dentures might become loose sooner than they should.
- Worn out denture lining. When dentures are older, say five to eight years old, the lining tends to wear out and they may loosen. At this point, they can more easily fall out.
- Shrinking gum and jaw tissue. Up until about 18 months after teeth are extracted, the gum and jaw tissue tends to shrink. This could make dentures fit loosely or fall out.
- Needing new dentures. Dentures aren’t made to last forever. Dentists recommend replacing even the highest quality dentures every 7–10 years.
