How to Floss Your Teeth Thoroughly, the Right Way
Flossing teeth the right way involves five easy steps. It’s good to get in the habit of flossing twice a day, which can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Since you’re spending time flossing daily, you might as well make your effort count by doing it correctly.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the following five steps for flossing teeth.
Step 1
Pull out about 18 inches of floss and break it off. Wind most of the floss around the middle finger on one hand. Wind the rest of the floss around the same finger on your other hand.
Step 2
Hold the floss taut between your thumbs and forefingers of each hand.
Step 3
Move the floss between your teeth in a gentle rubbing motion. Don’t snap the floss into your gums.
Step 4
As the floss reaches the gum line, curve the floss into a C shape against one tooth. Then, glide it gently into the area between the tooth and gum.
Step 5
As you hold the floss tightly against the tooth, gently rub the side of the tooth. Your motion should be away from the gum in up and down motions. Use this same method for all of your teeth. Be sure to floss the back side of your last tooth.
Also ensure you don’t floss too hard. Flossing teeth shouldn’t be painful. You don’t want to damage the tissue between your teeth. However, use enough pressure that you remove the food and plaque that builds up between teeth.
