What You Should Know About Brushing Your Teeth and Toothbrushes
Toothbrushes might not seem like a major concern to you, but here are some interesting facts. Knowing something about toothbrushes could help you improve your dental care.
Mouthhealthy.org (a site from the American Dental Association) has gathered some information about toothbrushes beginning with how to choose a toothbrush.
Are all toothbrushes created equal?
Not really, and in fact the bristles may fall out of a toothbrush that isn’t probably made. That’s why toothbrushes carry an ADA Seal of Acceptance, which promises that normal use won’t make the bristles fall out or cause the handle to break.
How often should you replace your toothbrush?
A good toothbrush will last three to four months. However, if the bristles become frayed sooner than that, you should replace it sooner. Why? Frayed bristles aren’t as effective for cleaning your teeth.
Does it matter whether you brush first or floss first?
No, it doesn’t matter. What is important is ensuring you brush and also floss every day. Brush for two minutes, twice a day. Floss at least once a day.
Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one?
According to the ADA, one is not better than the other. However, what is important is that you brush for two minutes and use fluoride toothpaste. If an electric toothbrush helps you accomplish that task and is more comfortable to use, then it may be the better choice for you. You can discuss toothbrushes with your dentist and get a professional opinion what will work best, based on your dental issues.
How should you clean your toothbrush?
The important thing is to keep your toothbrush free of bacteria. To do that, you should let the toothbrush air out. Don’t store it in a closed container or alongside other toothbrushes where cross-contamination can occur. After using it, you should rinse it with tap water and ensure there is no debris or toothpaste stuck between the bristles. Then allow it to dry.
