Whiter Teeth are not necessarily healthier teeth or even stronger teeth. In fact, for the most part, slightly yellow teeth are both stronger and healthier than white teeth. Granted, teeth that look darkened or have stains are not usually healthy, but teeth with a light yellow cast are normal.
Science Focus magazine explains why natural, strong teeth are not white. They are a few shades darker than white paper or piano keys. Tooth enamel is whitish-blue in color, but the dentin underneath it is either light gray or yellow. Because enamel is also translucent, the dentin color shows through the enamel layer and creates a yellow or gray cast on the tooth.
