Best Practices for Using a Toothbrush

Toothbrush care might be something you haven’t given much thought to. But just as with anything else, a bit of knowledge can go a long ways.

What You Should Know about Toothbrush Care

Dentists agree that the best regimen is to use a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush for 2 minutes two times a day.

The ADA recommends replacing your toothbrush as soon as the bristles look matted or frayed. Otherwise, a good rule of thumb is to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. A worn out toothbrush won’t be as effective in cleaning your teeth.

Toothbrush Do’s and Don’ts

Because a toothbrush can carry bacteria, you never want to share it with other people. Also, you should rinse it thoroughly after using it and ensure there’s no food or toothpaste still on it.

Allow your toothbrush to dry out by storing it in an upright position. Do not cover it in a closed container. Bacteria breeds in moisture, so you want to be sure it dries out. If you’re traveling, ensure it dries out before putting it in your travel container.

About Oral Bacteria

Toothbrushes can harbor bacteria and there are recommended ways to deal with it. You can soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide or Listerine mouthwash. Doing either will reduce bacteria by about 85%. You can also buy a toothbrush sanitizer but you should ensure it has FDA approval noted on the product.

It’s not a good idea to sanitize your toothbrush by putting it in the microwave or dishwasher because the heat can damage it.

If you’ve been sick, you might want to consider sanitizing your toothbrush or buying a new one to avoid any lingering bacteria.
