A recent study on adult braces shows that an increasing number of adults are getting braces. The desire for a healthy, attractive smile is on the rise.
In 2012, The New York Times reported that the number of adult braces or other teeth-straightening treatment had gone up 58 percent from 1994 to 2010, which translates to a rise from 680,000 patients annually to 1.1 million patients.
According to the Dental Tribune, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) conducted a study that found 27 percent of U.S. and Canadian orthodontic patients are adults. This percentage means that there are 1,441,000 orthodontic patients who are 18 and older. The study indicated a 16 percent increase from 2012 to 2014.
What changed? Why are more adults getting braces?
People are drawn to the almost invisible orthodontic treatment options available today, which includes clear wires and brackets, and clear aligners, such as Six Month Smiles®.
Also, today people are more educated about the benefits — that a beautiful smile can mean a healthy mouth, teeth and gums.
Affordability was another factor because many dentists offer payment options that people can afford through discounts or payments over time. In addition, many people carry dental insurance, which offsets costs.
The study also showed that despite the economic impact of the recent past recession, people were paying for orthodontics. They believed that their orthodontics also led to improvements in their professional and personal lives. The survey indicated 75 percent attributed such life changes to their improved smiles, and 92 percent would recommend orthodontic treatment to other adults.
