It’s good to know about some toothache remedies until you can see your dentist. During regular office hours, many dentists will take you right away if you’re in extreme pain. These remedies are especially helpful when you develop a painful toothache during the weekend or on a holiday.

To deal with the throbbing pain around your tooth and jaw, WebMD suggests a variety of toothache remedies.

Toothache Remedies as Short-Term Relief to Stave Off the Pain

Warm Salt Water

Mix a half-teaspoon of table salt with eight ounces of water. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out. Don’t swallow it. It’s possible bits of food may be stuck around the sore tooth and you can gently floss to remove any food particles.

Over-the-counter (OTC) Pain Relievers

Any number of over-the-counter pain relievers can help relieve pain, such as ibuprofen, Tylenol or Advil. Simply swallow the tablet with water and don’t put it directly on the tooth or gums. However another remedy, which you can apply directly to the tooth and gums are over-the-counter anesthetics that are in gel and liquid form. They contain benzocaine, which numbs your mouth. But they are only intended for short-term use.

Ice

Applying an ice pack against your cheek may offer some comfort. You can also put some ice in your hand on the same side of the body as your sore tooth and rub it between your thumb and forefinger for seven minutes or until the area turns numb. Research indicates this may stop pain signals to your brain.

Clove Oil

For many years people have used clove oil as a natural remedy for pain. You rub it directly onto the sore area or use a cotton ball and dab it against the tooth and gums. It contains a numbing ingredient that may be as effective as OTC toothache gels.
