Ways you can whiten your teeth

If you decide to whiten your teeth for Valentine’s Day, it could make your partner happy and also boost your confidence.

According to onhealth.com, tooth whitening is highly popular among Americans. Americans spend an estimated $2 billion a year on keeping their teeth white and their smile bright.

The two main methods for whitening your teeth involve beaching and non-bleaching products.

Beaching Products

Two types of peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and carbide peroxide, can remove stains. In fact, these substances can make teeth even whiter than their natural shade. Over-the-counter bleaching products, such as whitening kits and strips contain 7% peroxide. By comparison, dentists use products that contain whitening agents with up to 35% or 45% peroxide.

Professional Whitening

Professional whitening done through your dentist takes about an hour. The procedure typically involves applying a whitening gel and heating lamp in three periods of 20 minutes. Some dentists may use a laser.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you consult with your dentist before bleaching your teeth. This way you can avoid possible complications.

Whitening Your Teeth Yourself

You can buy over-the-counter whitening kits that contain whitening trays, strips, rinses and toothpastes. If you choose to whiten at home, the ADA recommends buying products with the ADA seal of approval. This guarantees a higher standard through products that are safe and effective.

Keep in mind, that synthetic materials do not respond to bleaching products. This includes porcelain veneers, dental crowns, dental bonding, caps and  fillings. In addition, discoloration due to medications or tooth injury do not do well with whitening.
