How to deal with keto breath

Keto breath is one of the early side effects of going on a low-carb (also called keto) diet. It’s great to eat healthy, lose some weight and eliminate sugars and starch from your diet. The keto diet does this while it increases fats and proteins. Keto is a shortened word from the word ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your body lacks carbohydrates to burn for fuel. It burns fat instead and this results in weight loss. After a while, your liver adapts to the difference in diet, and the bad breath disappears.

However, when your body isn’t used to a keto diet, you can get keto breath. Keto breath is often described as a metallic, sweet or fruity smell.

According to Medical News Today, it takes about 21 days of a keto diet to reach the state of ketosis.

Natural remedies to reduce keto breath

  • Drink more water. This helps the body flush out ketones. Ketones are substances your body produces when you reduce your sugar intake. The ketones can leave your body through urine. Drinking water also helps wash away the bacteria in your mouth that can cause bad breath.
  • Use breath mints or chew gum. Mints and gum can help hide the keto smell. Chewing gum also increases salvia that helps wash away bacteria.
  • Frequently brush your teeth. Not only does it help cover up the odor, it also gets rid of food particles and bacteria.
