Myths-about-teeth-whitening

Some home teeth whitening remedies may do more harm than good

Myths about natural teeth whitening have emerged as the demand for whiter teeth has become popular.

According to mouthhealthy.com (an ADA website), the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry asked people how they wanted to improve their smiles. The most prevalent answer was whiter teeth.

Is the natural color of healthy teeth a bright white (the color of snow or white paper)?

No, it is not. A tooth has various layers. The outermost layer is the tooth enamel, and the layer immediately underneath it is dentin. Tooth enamel is a translucent lawyer, which means some of the dentin layer naturally shows through it. Dentin is either a light gray or yellow color.

Can fruits make your teeth whiter or is this one of the myths about teeth whitening?

One myth is that acidic fruits and baking soda can whiten your teeth. Naturally acidic fruits include oranges, lemons, pineapple and mango. Apple cider vinegar is also acidic. Acids are a problem because they can wear away enamel and expose the dentin layer. Keep in mind, enamel has a vital function, protecting your teeth against cavities and nerve sensitivity.

Do scrubs make your teeth whiter?

Examples of scrubs are activated charcoal or baking soda hydrogen peroxide paste. Scrubs might be too abrasive. As the enamel wears thinner, the dentin layer appears. Your teeth will appear more yellow as this happens.

Do spices and oils like coconut oil and turmeric whiten your teeth?

No reliable scientific evidence exists that shows they are effective.

What are the best natural way to keep your teeth white?

  • Daily brushing for two minutes
  • Using toothpaste with an ADA Seal of Acceptance
  • Flossing between your teeth once daily
  • Limiting foods that stain teeth (coffee, tea and red wine)
  • Not using tobacco products
  • Regular dental visits for cleanings
