What is LANAP and how does it work?

LANAP for treating gum disease has been a major breakthrough in dentistry. Many dentists use it today instead of traditional surgery.

What is LANAP?

LANAP stands for laser assisted new attachment procedure. A laser is a device that causes atoms and molecules to emit light. The light emitted can be of different wavelengths that create very narrow beams used to cut through surfaces. Dentists use the laser to treat gum disease.

How does LANAP work to treat gum disease?

Gum disease leads to infection. Dentists must remove the infection located between teeth and gums. Traditional surgery involved cutting the gum and pulling it away from the tooth. The dentist would then remove the infection. The last step was reattaching the gum to the tooth. Today dentists can use LANAP for treating gum disease.

What are the benefits of LANAP over traditional gum surgery?

Traditional surgery was painful and patients needed time to recover. Dentists would use a scalpel to cut the gums, pull them back and do surgery around the tooth. In addition, sometimes dentists would have to remove part of the bone. LANAP accomplishes treatment without the pain, cutting, stitches and recovery time. In fact, LANAP also stimulates bone growth and the reattachment of the gum to the tooth. Without removing gum tissue, LANAP can remove the infection that is causing inflammation. The dentist doesn’t damage or have to remove any healthy gum tissue. Laser surgery takes gum treatment to a whole new level.

Dr. Baker was the first dentist to bring LANAP technology in dentistry to Austin, Texas in 2004.
