Keeping-up-with-technology

Staying at the forefront of dentistry

Keeping up with technology is something that Dr. Baker has always worked hard at doing.

In fact, he was the first one to bring a form of gum therapy to Austin, called LANAP. LANAP stands for laser assisted new attachment procedure. It’s a way to treat someone’s gums without having to do cut and stitch surgery. It uses a laser instead.

Continuing education enables dentists to stay on top of technological developments. This is how they have access to the best tools to treat their patients.

That said, he wanted to tell you about a recent technology breakthrough. It is so advanced that it sounds like science fiction.

Microrobots that clean teeth

According to Science Daily, a multidisciplinary team at the University of Pennsylvania developed an amazing new technology. The research team used nanoparticles that can shape shift into a variety of forms. The different forms help them clean teeth.

The microrobots consist of iron oxide particles. They are capable of catalytic and magnetic activity. In fact, they can become bristle like structures that clean dental plaque from teeth. This eliminates the biofilms that cause gum disease and cavities. They also can transform into elongated strings to floss between teeth.

A catalytic activity is one that increases the rate of a chemical reaction. Furthermore, during both brushing and flossing, the nanoparticles produce antimicrobials. The antimicrobials kill harmful oral bacteria.

Nanoparticles can release hydrogen peroxide that kills bacteria responsible for tooth decay. It also breaks down biofilm. Whether your teeth are crooked or straight, the microrobots clean the hard-to-reach areas.

Researchers have used them on teeth mockups and real human teeth. What’s more, the robotics system can brush, floss and rinse your mouth all at once in a hands-free way. They can also program them for soft or harder bristles to avoid damaging the gums. In fact, researchers can customize them for personal use.

This amazing technology could be the wave of the future. The researchers received support from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research.
